MSG: Train Your Replacements: How to Disciple Men to Serve 1 Timothy 3:8-13

This message was presented on February 23, 2014 as part of the series on 1 Timothy.

Last week we began looking at the qualifications of the elder and I wanted to make sure we understood that first verse. Paul said, “This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.” (1 Tim. 3:1 NKJ) I emphasized that word “if” and said it was not a Third Class Condition as it was in 1 Tim. 2:15, but a First Class Condition, which means the phrase is a statement of fact. In other words, it is not saying, “if a man desires the position (maybe he does and maybe he doesn’t).” Continue reading

MSG: Train Your Replacements: How to Train Men to Oversee; 1 Timothy 3:1-7

This message was presented on February 16, 2014 as part of the series on 1 Timothy.

The question came up from last week’s message, “What roles should, or can a woman serve in outside of the church?” I’m very open to this, so come to the home group that meets on Wednesday nights, here at the church at 7pm and we’ll discuss it. I’m interested in your thoughts. You might feel like Job, not knowing why things happen. Let’s talk.

My custom is to walk through the book of the Bible we’re studying and then deal with related topics from the text at the end. That way…if the Rapture happens, I don’t have to deal with them! No seriously, I want you to have the flow of the text and we’ll come back to them. You are always welcome to ask or write down questions, or get together. Continue reading

MSG: Train Your Replacements: How to Disciple Worship: 1 Timothy 2:13-15

This message was presented on February 9, 2014 as part of the series on 1 Timothy.

Some members of a certain church denomination were discussing whether or not the church should ordain women as pastors. During this discussion, a man jumped to his feet and said, “We should ordain women as pastors because they are just as bright as men.” A few people said, “Here, here.” Another commented, “We have women doctors and women lawyers, so why should we not also have women pastors?” A few more said, “Here, here.” Another yelled, “Women are equal to men and therefore they should be pastors.”  Continue reading

This message was presented on February 2, 2014 as part of the series on 1 Timothy.

How do you know when something in Scripture is culturally relevant or not? Does what Paul wrote in his day apply to us today? There are several questions from the text we must answer. For example:

  • What does it mean for women to learn in silence?
  • Why did Paul write that women are not to teach men?
  • Is Paul saying women are more easily deceived?
  • What does it mean that women are saved through childbearing? Continue reading

MSG: Train Your Replacements: How to Disciple Worship 1 Timothy 2:8-10

I’ve worshiped in many countries and there are many differences.  In Manilla, Philippines, people dressed up for “hot” and played contemporary music. In Milan, Italy, people dressed up in suits and dresses as well as casual, and played guitars and keyboards. In Belarussia, I learned that the pastor does not seek a verbal response from the people and they had a simple hymns with keyboard. In Uzbekistan, there was a formality to the church service and people approached the communion table along two aisles, one for grape juice and one for real wine. In Marseilles, France it was just like Grace, but in French. Continue reading
