Book Review: How Could a Loving God…? By Ken Ham

“How could a loving God…?” by Ken Ham is a heart wrenching account of how his brother died from ‘frontal lobe dementia” and incurable brain disease. Ken does an incredible job of journaling his brother Rob’s tremendous ministry of preaching God’s Word and then describing how everything changed when he was transformed to an empty hulk of a decaying brain and body. MSG: Train Your Replacement: Wage Good Warfare: 1 Tim. 1:18-20

This message was presented November 17, 2013 as part of the 1 Timothy series.

When a lioness is hungry, she’ll scope out the landscape for easy prey. When she sees an antelope herd, what does she do? She does not go for the main herd. She doesn’t look for the strongest antelope. She looks for the one that is straying or lagging behind, especially if it is wounded. Continue reading

SGL: Handling Politics in Home Group

Home group is the place where we can be authentic and transparent. If that is the case then anything goes right? What about politics? Do we follow the old expression, “Don’t talk about religion or politics at the dinner table.” Well that doesn’t work, because home groups are all about spiritual matters Continue reading

SGL: Timeliness in Showing up to the Group

Normally, timeliness is important for showing up to work.  Your paycheck depends on timeliness. Timeliness is important if you are going to get married. It’s not a good way to start out marriage by being late to walk down the aisle or keep the bride waiting.  Timeliness is also important if you are in a race or game. The whole team depends on you to be timely or your final race time depends on timing. But when it comes to church meetings, some people are more lax. Why is timeliness important for home group? SGL: The Length of the Meeting

Does it matter how long a meeting lasts? Does it matter if some meetings are one hour and others are four hours? There are many considerations as we look at home groups, which address culture, participants and family schedules. Paul said it well, “Let all things be done decently and in order.” (1 Cor. 14:40) Put these principles into practice. Continue reading

SGL: Opening the Meeting

First impressions count.  They are important in a job interview, showing your house when it is for sale or going out for the first time in the courting process (although that wouldn’t be the first time you’ve been with the person). It’s a whole lot easier to maintain a good perspective than to try and recover one that has been damaged. Continue reading

Book Review: Counseling the Sexual Addict, A Biblical Guide Steve Gallagher

A Biblical Guide to Counseling the Sexual Addict is an excellent read for pastors, counselors and those who love God and love people. Pornography is destroying America because it treats women as objects, because it hinders intimacy in marriage, because it makes men passive cats and because it takes away God’s role of men in the world – to mirror who He is. Gallagher also authored the excellent book “At the Altar of Sexual Idolatry.” Continue reading

MSG: Training Your Replacement: Burst Forth Declaring Jesus! 1 Tim. 1:15-17

Why do people go where they go on vacation? Lots of people go to the coasts of Florida, because they love the warmth of the sun and sand and the smell of salt water in the air. There are many who love the grandeur of the Rockies, so they travel out to Colorado. Some like the finger lakes of New York or the hills of Tennessee and some like the bayous of Louisiana or the islands of Hawaii. Continue reading
