This morning I rented a Makita variable speed jack hammer. I used it last week to open up the area around the plumbing into the concrete basement floor. This time I needed to move a pipe 7″ so I could put it into a wall I’m building and then move the shower drain (actually, I have a plumber who is coming out to move them, but I broke up the floor to get it ready. It was four hours of sheer exhilaration and fun! Breaking through four inches of concrete is not a hammer and chisel option. You need something built for the task, hence the jack hammer.
As I exposed the plumbing below the surface of the basement floor, I got to see what no one had seen since the original installer put in. It reminded me of what counseling is sometimes like.
I’ve had the privilege of listening to many people over the last 27 years of ministry. I’ve been blessed to help some people. I’ve learned an incredible amount of wisdom from the sin patterns of others and about myself. I’ve also been deceived by some people who have put on a “front” with their words, but they had no intent of changing. They had put up concrete walls. My words were not going to break through. The only thing that would work would be to use a hammer – a big hammer, like a jack hammer.
Praise the Lord that His “hammer” will always work. God said, “Is not My word like a fire?” says the LORD, “And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?” (Jer. 23:29 NKJ) God’s word always accomplishes its intention, but many do not humble themselves before it. They will say you need more than the Bible. In other words, “God’s Word is not sufficient.” That is contrary to what God says, “
5 Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, 6 who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. (2 Cor. 3:5-6 NKJ)
God has made His Word sufficient, because His Spirit guides us into it and works God’s work in us.
Are you open to God’s Word? Does it have to be a hammer in your life? Stubbornness and pride will be broken up, but in the mean time, will you miss out on the blessing of God’s healing power? Turn to God from yourself and you’ll be set free to do what no unbeliever can do – glorify the Lord Jesus and bless other people! Do not wait for the hammer to come. The experience will not be easy.
