We were talking about 1 John 2:12-14 at Men’s Prayer this week and discussing the whole book of 1 John. As I was looking at the book, I remembered a short passage from 1 John 2:1-2. “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. ”
That passage is powerful! I have cited it many times and I often easily skim over it. But it should stop me in my tracks every time I look at it. Does it stop you?
Consider it again, “if anyone sins, we have an Advocate…” Do you realize, we don’t have a highly paid lawyer, or a state District Attorney, or even of the US Attorney General to defend us? None of them would be adequate. We have to have the King of Kings, Supreme Judge and Sovereign Ruler as our advocate for any and every sin we commit! Whoa! And what does that say about the significance of even “small” sins? Sin is horrendous! God is amazing! Amazing Grace! What an awesome, holy God we serve.
Have you rejoiced in His advocacy for you? Are you bursting forth with joy over what Jesus has done for you? “Thank you Lord for your forgiveness and restoration!” “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9).
