There are hundreds are different types of beverages.  The available products of Coke and Pepsi alone make my head spin.  Then add in all the other major producers and the add-on producers like Meijer’s brands and you have an incredible number of products.  Are we “for real?” What would happen if people did not have their choices?

            There is one beverage that IS the most thirst quenching.  It will never leave you thirsty and it continues to quench your thirst long after you have drunk from the source. The question is, “Do people, let alone Christians, know about it?”  Jesus offers that one thirst quenching beverage that will satisfy every God-fearing thirst.  However it is the one beverage that dictionaries exclude from being a beverage – water (although Jesus’ water is unlike all other water!)

When Jesus avoided attention He was acquiring because so many came to faith and received baptism, He went through Samaria on His way to Galilee.  He met the woman at the well, who was avoiding people also.  However, she avoided people for a different reason than why Jesus left Jerusalem.  At noon, when Jesus sent the disciples into the city to get some Church’s Chicken (okay, it might have been something else), He asked the woman to give Him a drink.

The woman realized Jesus was Jewish and questioned Him regarding His request. Notice the divine dialogue,

⁹ Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, `Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” (John 4:9-10)

The woman is focused on mundane, earthly things.  She is not aware that Jesus has just built a great bridge to her heart and she reaches out from her earthly perspective. So Jesus crosses the bridge and transitions to offer to her the spiritual remedy to her soul – something that would quench her spiritual thirst—living water.  However, she is still thinking of her earthly, fleshly needs and so she asked Him,

¹¹ The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? (John 4:11 NKJ)

“Where do You get that living water?” she asked.  She did not want to go out in public, because her lifestyle brought too much attention on her –negative attention. She likely thought, “If I can get this living water, I won’t have to face the people who ridicule me.”

Jesus clarified for the woman that the water from well was temporary, but He would give her living water that would spring up to everlasting life,

¹³ Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,

¹⁴ “but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life. (John 4:13-14 NKJ)

Friends, Jesus offers you living water that will quench your thirst.  In fact, any time you become thirsty, your thirst will be quenched.  Furthermore, you can be physically thirsty from a hot and dry (or humid) day and you will be refreshed because of His living water. He calls the woman to holiness by asking her to call her husband. She realized that she fell short of God’s standard, because she had had five husbands and the one she was with was not her husband.  She came to the point of decision, trusted Jesus and revealed that by going into the city to tell those who ridiculed her that she had found the Messiah.

Later Jesus described the living water as rivers of living water. You can have that also, if you will acknowledge your need of a Savior from sin and trust in Jesus as your Savior. When you depend on the Lord from a pure heart (repentant heart with sins confessed), you too can have this river of living water. John recorded Jesus’ words,

³⁷ On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.

³⁸ “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

³⁹ But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believingin Him would receive; for the HolySpirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. (John7:37-39 NKJ)

So, if this water is like a river, how can we be so discouraged and downcast?  I know my excuses, but they are all self-centered and lack trust in the Lord. I fail to trust Him moment by moment in a faith-rest type living in Jesus.

Do you want this thirst quenching “beverage”?  It is the Holy Spirit as He guides the pursuing Christian into God’s Word.  It is overflowing and everlasting.  So how can a growing Christian grumble about what there is to drink or not drink?  You may be like a deer in a dry and weary land, so read what the psalmist wrote,

As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.

² My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God¹?

³ My tears have been my food day and night, While they continually say to me, “Where is your God?”

⁴ When I remember these things, I pour out my soul within me. For I used to go with the multitude; I went with them to the house of God, With the voice of joy and praise, With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast.

⁵ Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him For the help of His countenance¹.

⁶ O my God¹, my soul is cast down within me; Therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan, And from the heights of Hermon, From the Hill Mizar.

⁷ Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls; All Your waves and billows have gone over me.

⁸ The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, And in the night His song shall be with me– A prayer to the God of my life.

⁹ I will say to God my Rock, “Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”

¹⁰ As with a breaking of my bones, My enemies reproach me, While they say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”

¹¹ Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God. (Ps. 42:1-11 NKJ)

Drink from the Holy Spirit in God’s Word and you will never be thirsty.
